The vegvísir (in Icelandic "guide of the way", perhaps more elegantly translatable as "signpost") is a symbol that is part of the famous galdrastafir, or "magic symbols"

The vegvísir appears in its current form in a manuscript from the second half of the 19th century (it is dated 1860 on the official site of Icelandic manuscripts.
It is also known as Huld ("Hidden", name of trollessa, or elf). It is a collection of ciphers for writing coded messages, while the last section includes a series of symbols with captions illustrating their powers, ranging from that of dreaming what one desires, to that of defeating a enemy, to that of protection against evil spirits. Some words in the captions are written in runes of the recent alphabet or other cipher symbols.

The "original" vegvísir, i.e. the one handed down to us by the Huld code, consists of two symbols. The caption reads (in modern Icelandic, very easy to read): 'Beri maður stafi þessa á sér villist maður ekki í hríðum né vondu veðri þó ókunnugur sé'.

Which means: "Carry these symbols on you and you will not get lost in the storm or in bad weather, even though you do not know (where you are)."
